Quarry Development

By Kenneth C. "Ken" McCall

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Brisbane

This information is provided by the candidate
I believe we have not fully explored all the alternatives available to us.
The city has basically said that we only have 3 alternatives with respect to the Quarry:

1. Allow the development of another housing community (Summer Hill Homes).
2. Allow the development of an extended Crocker Park.
3. Or - Allow the Quarry to continue operation.

Well, I frankly do not believe that any of the above are the only alternatives we have for the quarry site and I find myself currently opposed to them all. Has the city really explored all the potential uses of the site? I do not think so. I am of the impression that it was simply easier to let yet another developer come to them rather than take the time and energy to find a proper solution.

I favor finding a solution for the city of Brisbane that will bring the operation of the quarry to a halt. I would like to see the city fully explore all the options, such as the ability to qualify for federal, state, and/or private funding to acquire the quarry property and use the space for maximum benefit to the entire community. One such alternative to consider, for which there are frequently funds and grants available, would be the establishment of a non-profit, multi-venue, educational center. A center of this type might include a natural habitat learning center, an arboretum, and an equine learning center for the handicapped and other residents of Brisbane and the bay area, along with other possible educational wildlife facilities. I have already begun researching this as well as other alternatives that would include the potential involvement of Brisbane citizens, seniors, unemployed, and handicapped as docents and educators.
