Water and Sewer Rates

By Kenneth C. "Ken" McCall

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Brisbane

This information is provided by the candidate
Hold off on further rate increases until after we have completed the Mater Plan to know exactly what we are facing.
On this issue I firmly believe that the current and future monetary impact upon citizens and business owners of Brisbane could have been lessened had actions been taken to raise the rates gradually over the past 5 to 10 years. It's unfortunate that members of previous City Councils knew there were serious problems with the systems and chose to take no action in the past - thus compounding the effects on citizens and businesses now. At this point we can sit and point fingers all we want. However, I believe that would be a waste of time and energy when the unfortunate reality is that we are experiencing an unavoidable raise along with future raises in water and sewer rates as a necessary step that must be taken to address the needs of our aging systems and the impact of state regulations requiring us to deal with chloramine treated water. To lessen the inevitable impact I support the exploration of alternative funding to pay for the capital improvements that must be made to assure the safety and high quality of services we deserve from our systems, rather than relying on rate hikes only, to provide quick fixes for funding problems. I further support making any final decisions with respect to what the priorities and their positioning in time must be until after the completion of the Water and Sewer Master Plans. Only at this time will we really know what we are facing; what must be done; and what can remain on our wish list in an ideal world for the future.
