PLANNED GROWTH

By Karyl Matsumoto

Candidate for Councilmember; City of South San Francisco

This information is provided by the candidate
While recognizing the need for workforce housing and improved public transportation, the task before us is to balance these needs against over-crowding, preservation of open space and other quality of life issues.
While I am committed to protecting the neighborhoods, it is also important that we provide reasonable housing for our residents' children to remain in South San Francisco. Whether we like it or not, growth is inevitable. There are no easy solutions. The majority of vacant land you see has already been purchased. I support higher density housing as it leaves a smaller footprint, curtails sprawl and thus yields more open space.

After two years and multiple public meetings, our General Plan was adopted October, 1999, and it was voted the best General Plan in the state of California. We even incorporated mixed use/transit-oriented development because we believed it is a viable option to mitigating increased traffic incurred as a result growth.

Diversified development provides a revenue stream that allows us to maintain high quality of city services which includes more police and fire personnel on the street, more parks and green spots, and longer library hours. Planned development permits us to monitor and correct present and future traffic impacts as well as imposed developer fees for additional childcare facilities, public art and green fees.
