Community Support for Athletics

Candidate for Member, Board of Education; Mount Pleasant Central School District

The full taxpayer base should not be forced to support an excessive sports program mandated by a minority
The over forty school provided and taxpayer financed sports teams provided expensive distraction from the reality of competition and potential for failure when success is not earned. Community funded sports, separate from taxpayer mandated support better reflect the needs of the community. I personally was deeply involved in a self-finaced baseball program that did not draw on mandated taxed funding.

Parental not community responsibility must be restored. To have children the expact the whole community to bring them up is not an approprite behavior.

This issue also is exempfified by a Westlake student whom I was privileged to teach who went on to a university several hundred miles away, was unable to compete academically, and returned after dropping out in a depression at encountering, for the first time, a challenge not easily met. His lack of community or parental on site support worsened the problem, as especially its first time occurrence because Westlake does not permit realistic experiences with failure, a necessary part of growing up. In avoiding the likelihood of the intrusion of the "real world" on our children's lives we do them a severe injustice and put them at extreme peril when they veture beyond our community.
