Born: April 24, 1950

Iowa City, Iowa

Moved to Solana Beach: 1952 Moved to Cardiff: 1954 Moved to Encinitas: 1957

Attended Cardiff Elementary School, Encinitas Central, Ocean Knoll, Oak Crest Junior High, San Dieguito Union High School. Graduated in 1968. Attended Palomar Junior College for 1 ½ years before joining the Marine Corps Reserves.

Married: August 12, 1972 (36 years) Wife: Karen Son: Brian 31 years old Daughter: Christi 27 years old

Occupation: Own and operate local plumbing repair business (Bert's Plumbing) since 1974.

Interests: Golf, basketball, softball, and also enjoys organic gardening-vegetables, fruits and flowers.

Homeowner: Cardiff Park Place 1973-1977

Encinitas 1977 to present

Involved with my father in creating the 1st playground at San Dieguito Park in Solana Beach.

1957-1963: Marched in previous Christmas parades as a youth either through Scouts or Oak Crest marching band.

1963: Sang with local Up With People Group (Soloist) while at Oak Crest Junior High School.

1968-69: Volunteered construction work at San Dieguito Boys and Girls Club (Oak Crest) and original YMCA.

1970-1977: Served in US Marine Corps active and reserve duty.

1972: Worked as a member of Encinitas Optimist Club to build the first girls softball field located at Brown's Nursery on Lake Dr. in Cardiff.

1973: Served as secretary of the Encinitas Optimist Club we built what later became Bert Long (My father) girls softball field on Devonshire.

Organized and built temporary site on Saxony Road for boys Pony Colt baseball field. Maintained the old Ecke restrooms and snack bar on original location. Donated all plumbing materials and labor for the new snack bar. Coached and managed sons little league teams, T-ball thru senior league. Umpired boys baseball and girls softball. Sponsorships: Sponsored Little League, Soccer and Girls softball for the last 34 years.

1985: Organized and designed kindergarten play structure at Ocean Knoll Elementary School.

1986-87: Helped with 2 Eagle Scout projects at Ocean Knoll, which included the running track and the back parking lot.

1988: Received from Ocean Knoll School the Honorary Founders Day Award.

1990's: Helped organize La Costa 35 Athletic Club's Swing with your Heart Charity softball event.

1992-1995: Chaired Grad Nite committees at San Dieguito Union High School.

1994-Present: Volunteered for Encinitas Chamber Oktoberfest sign committee.

1996-1999: Chaired Grad Nite committees at La Costa Canyon High School.

1997: Volunteered at La Costa Canyon High School for the boys varsity baseball team, to construct restrooms and dug outs.

1997: Received La Costa Canyon Spirit Award.

1998-99: Received La Costa Canyon Everyday Hero Award.

1997: Received Volunteer of the Year Award from the Encinitas Chamber.

2000-Present: Attended all but four regularly scheduled City Council meetings.

2001: Chaired design and construction committee for the Encinitas Chamber's entry in the Holiday Parade, which received the Best of Parade Award.

2001-Present: Joined the Encinitas Holiday Parade Committee.

2002-Present: Voted on to Downtown Encinitas Main Street Associations board of directors.

2003: Appointed to the Cities Parks and Recreation Commission by the City Council.

2004: Hosted Community Resource Garden tour at our home.

2004: Entered in the Holiday Parade for Bert's Plumbing and received an award for Best Use of Lights.

2005: Volunteered with the popular television program, Extreme Makeover on Dr. Brian Wofford's home make over.

2005: Received an award for Director of the Year from the Downtown Main Street Association.

2005-Present: Voted as Chair person for Parks and Recreation Commission by fellow commissioners.

2006-Present: Continue to serve on Parks and Recreation Commission.

2006-Present: Served on the cities façade grant program.

2006-Present: Served on the Sister City Program and interviewed students for a trip to Japan.

2007: Worked on the Encinitas Heritage Museum's relocation construction crew by donating all of the plumbing materials and labor.

2007: Elected by the Downtown Encinitas Main Street Association Board to serve as president starting September 6th.

2008: Voted again as chairman for Parks and Recreation Commission.

2008: Continue to serve on the Encinitas Sister City Committee.

2008: Selected as Vice President for the newly formed Encinitas Preservation Association.

Our goal is to preserve our historical buildings.
The first objective is to preserve the 1928 Encinitas Boat Houses. This was entered
In to escrow on March 1st.

2008: We are continuing our sponsorship of girl's softball for the 34th year.

2008: Appointed to serve on the Encinitas Heritage Museum Site Committee.

2008: Continue to serve on the Encinitas Holiday/Christmas Parade Committee.

2008: Joined Rotary Club of Encinitas
