The South San Francisco Unified School District faced some troubled times in the past four years. Teachers went without a raise until recently and state financial struggles forced the district to shutter Hillside Elementary School and send its children elsewhere.

Diversity of ethnic background is important, but not nearly as important as a diversity of ideas and energy.

Goodman is a rising star. He is young, but has two children in the district, and has spent much of his adult life advocating for youth and standing up for what is right. He didn't receive the teachers' endorsement, but missed the opportunity to interview with the association as his brother was tragically murdered.

He is a co-founder of Bayview Magic, a nonprofit organization established by former San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi to create connections between at-risk youth and social services. He spends time raising money for the program and recently helped donate more than 3,000 backpacks to children who otherwise may not have gotten them. He has experience in leadership positions as former president of the Skyline College Student Body and is not afraid to speak his mind.

But his largest asset is his out-of-the-box thinking and new ideas. He understands the complexity of student test scores and school district budgets, but is interested in establishing partnerships in the community to create work programs for students not on the traditional university path. Through vocational training and partnerships with companies such as Genentech, Goodman would like to see additional paths for students to successful careers.

Weise, Goodman and Sanna each have the best ideas, the best ability to listen and the energy and drive to serve the diverse South San Francisco educational community. Each deserves your vote.
