Smaller Learning Environments Will Help Lower the Drop-out Rate

By Sandra J "Sandy" Dabasinskas

Candidate for Board Member; Escondido Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Studies of small schools, recently reviewed in Newsweek magazine, show that smaller learning environments lower the drop out rate.
  • I am an advocate for expanding our current comprehensive sites and creating small learning environments - "Schools within a School" - on the campuses. Newsweek's article gave examples of how small learning environments motivate students to be excited about learning because they are not just a number in a large school. Career paths connected to business partnerships can be developed which will give all students opportunities to be mentored in job fields which interest them and in which they can be successful.

  • Financial support for the development of small schools can be sought from the Bill Gates Foundation. Other grants may be available.
