The Issue

There is really only one issue in the 2004 Menlo Park City Council election: Who is going to control the future of our city -- development interests ...or the residents themselves?

The current Council majority has voted as a bloc on most issues without allowing open public discussion or explaining how each member of the bloc reached a decision. I will encourage healthy debate and stand accountable when making decisions that impact the livability of our community. I have 35 years experience as an attorney and a judge listening to divergent opinions, working with all parties to bridge differences and reach a just solution. I respect the democratic process where everyone has a voice.

Impartial and Independent

A retired judge and independent thinker, I will bring a fresh voice to the often polarized debates on issues such as development and traffic calming. A particularly divisive issue, residential zoning, will be coming up again next year. This time a new zoning ordinance should be developed through compromise and consensus building that will allow homeowners to enhance their property, while at the same time preserving everyone's rights to enjoy privacy, sunlight and local character. Unlike two of my opponents, I do not have vested financial interests in residential development or commercial construction that might sway my objectivity. I come forward with only the best interests of the people at heart.

Balance and Good Government

I hear frequently that the City Council has become dominated by a majority with an agenda that favors development interests when it comes to home building, heritage tree removal, and traffic levels. We don't need more dismantling of checks and balances in the name of streamlining or progress. I see too much bickering and reacting. Menlo Park needs a long term plan that will transcend individual Councils and give citizens comfort that we're headed in the right direction...as a community.
