By ANTHONY "FEL" AMISTAD

Candidate for Member, Board of Trustees; San Mateo County Board of Education; Trustee Area #4

This information is provided by the candidate
I am qualified to lead. I am passionate about education.
As a PhD candidate in public administration, I too am a student of "life." Life is a part of our educational experience. Whether I am a college graduate or not, we all are students on this planet. We do need support and help at times. Many of our disabled students need this support. I want to be that supportive source within the Board of Education.

The Oct. 18, 2004 San Jose News article on our troubled "Youth Authority" could not have come at a better time. It is critically important that we pay attention to our youth behind "bars." Their return to your neighborhoods could be more disastrous than before. Education is the solution. I will ensure that our detained youth get the best educational experience and training. Our future depends on a superior education of "all" our young adults.

Read the ensuing SJMN articles of the week of Oct. 17-20 to learn more about the deficiencies in our "Youth Authority." It resonates in our local communities as well.

I understand the ramifications and implications of politics in our public education. But, political agendas must not dictate policies. I will ensure that programs are protected and enhanced. The Early Start Program for Toddlers and Infants, the Early Intervention for Children with Special Needs, and other intensive early intervention programs for children with autism spectrum disorder are very important to the County.

In addition, elementary education and secondary education services for students with special needs deserve attention and protection.

Finally, "gang" proliferation must stop. I will work to reduce and eradicate sinister gangs in San Mateo County. I will work with juvenile detention and community leaders to fight this reality check of "local terrorist gangs."

Like any ominous situation, we must act fast. I intend to derail future gang threats and attacks on our school grounds.

I intend to meet the demands and needs of this office and to provide input to enhance the quality of education for our students.
