Rose Jacobs Gibson first joined the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 1999 and was last elected to a four-year term in November 2000. In January 2003, Supervisor Jacobs Gibson was chosen to serve as President of the Board. She currently represents the 4th District which includes the communities of Redwood City, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and unincorporated North Fair Oaks and Oak Knoll.

Upon coming to the Board, Supervisor Jacobs Gibson initiated Shared Vision 2010; the County's long-term strategic planning process, established Community Service Learning for at-risk youth crime prevention, and sponsored a countywide forum on regional housing requirements. Her call for a comprehensive analysis of e-Government opportunities has prompted departments within the County to review the way they conduct business.

Prior to her service on the Board, Supervisor Jacobs Gibson was a member of the East Palo Alto City Council from 1992 to 1999, serving as Mayor in 1995 and 1996. She was instrumental in turning around the once high crime rate city into a "City on the Move". With a goal of developing a viable community, today it boasts among the highest economic growth rates in the County.

As founder of the East Palo Alto Family Partnership Foundation, the Supervisor's commitment to her community provided a path toward public service encompassing San Mateo as a whole and beyond. Her involvement extended to the United Way of San Mateo Community Assessment Task Force, Service League of San Mateo County, member of the San Mateo County Office of Education Committee, League of California Cities, California Elected Women Association of Education and Research, and the American Heart Association.

Supervisor Jacobs Gibson is also the founder of a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides services to women and their families placing a special emphasis on support for single-women rearing sons.

In 1999, Supervisor Jacobs Gibson accepted the honor of being selected Woman of the Year by the 21st Assembly District, California State Legislature.

As a resident of the City of East Palo Alto, she is a tireless advocate for her community and the community-at-large, as well as a mother and grandmother.
