John (Jack) Matthews and his wife Patricia have been residents of San Mateo since 1974 where they raised their four children. He grew up in San Carlos attending Carlmont High School and Graduated from California Sate Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo with a degree in architecture in 1972.

Jack served on the Planning Commission of the City of San Mateo for eight years until June 2003 and is currently on the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the Transportation Corridor.

Jack is Principal of the firm John Matthews Architects founded in 1986 and located on Fourth Avenue in downtown San Mateo. Over the last eleven years John Matthews Architects has provided consulting services to the City of San Mateo for the design of many significant Storefront Improvement Projects. These include: The First Watch, St. Matthew Hotel, Trag's Market, 'M' is for Mystery Bookstore, the former Collins Pharmacy Building, and Camranh Bay Restaurant.

Jack has been very active as a volunteer over the years starting with his involvement with the Boy Scouts serving as a leader in Cub Scout Pack 458 in San Mateo and later as Scout Master for Troop 175 of Foster City for three years. He currently is a member of the Executive Board for the Pacific Skyline Council B.S.A.

He served as President of the American Institute of Architects for San Mateo County in 1992 and as a member of the Board of Directors for AIA California Council from 1994-96.

Consistent with his strong commitment to community service, he served on the Board of Directors for H.I.P. Housing for nine years, three as its President. H.I.P. Housing provides housing solutions for over 1000 people in need throughout the County of San Mateo.
