Ruth and Bruce moved to California in December 1990, and moved to their current home in Fairway Park West in June 1991.

Bruce Hotchkiss went to work for the State of California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) in mid-January 1991. Since that time he has worked in various areas of the BAR including consumer complaint mediation and fraud investigation. In conjunction with the Attorney General?s office and local District Attorneys, he has successfully prosecuted many unscrupulous automotive repair facilities, and smog technicians.
While working for the BAR, Bruce became active in his union, the California Union of Safety Employees (CAUSE), and union affiliate, the California Association of Regulatory Investigators and Inspectors (CARII). Hotchkiss was elected to the Board of Directors of CARII in 1996, and became the President in 1998. As part of his duties for CARII, he is on the Board of Directors of CAUSE. Bruce served on the 2001 Negotiations Team, is on the Political Action Committee, Controller?s Committee, and is chair of the Scholarship Committee. Hotchkiss is President of CAUSE?s business corporation, Unit 7 Incorporated, a deli/café.
His union work led to two appointments to state advisory committees, the Departmental Transportation Advisory Committee, and Inspection and Maintenance Review Committee.
Bruce has volunteered for the past eleven years as a judge for the Northern California Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Challenge (formerly Chrysler/AAA Troubleshooting Contest). The Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Challenge is a national automotive diagnosis and repair competition for high school students.
Bruce was appointed to Pacifica Open Space Committee in 1994 and to the Pacifica Planning Commission in 1996 to an interim position and reappointed to a full four-year term in 1999.
