Smart Voter Official Statement for Maxine Gonsalves

Candidate for
City Council; City of Pacifica

This is a copy of information submitted to elections officials by the candidate

MAXINE GONSALVES

Occupation: Incumbent

Education and Qualifications:

I have lived in Pacifica 34 years and have raised my family here. I taught in San Francisco for 33 years. My first involvement in community life was being elected to the Jefferson Union High School District (1981-1994). I was first elected to the Pacifica City Council in 1994.

I have been closely involved in the building of the new sewage treatment plant. There were many visits to sewage treatment plants before selecting which plant best met our needs. We decided a tertiary plant would be the most environmentally sound project for our seaside community.

I have shared with staff available grants for bike and pedestrian paths, and, in fact, we were fortunate enough to apply for a grant that supplied us with $500,000 to continue on with our bike and pedestrian path up through Devil's Slide. I also helped to get funding for the San Pedro Flood Control Project currently under construction. We expect to see this project completed by 2003. This will assure homeowners and businesses in the Linda Mar area from having to worry about flooding in their neighborhoods.

The new Police Station on Highway 1 was negotiated under my tenure. Our local legislators were able to secure $500,000 to allow us to complete the station. I've been involved in the final purchase of the Sanchez School and its development into an Art Center. First class art shows and concerts are all part of the venue at the art center. I was actually involved in the painting of the building, the mosaic archway, and the renovation of a new ceramic studio.

I have been a member of many local organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Laguna Salada School Volunteers (former Chair), AAUW, Friends of the Library, Fog Fest Parade Committee, Transportation Committee of the League of California Cities, Legislative Committee of San Mateo County, former President of the Peninsula division of the League of California Cities, and the Congestion Management & Air Quality Committee of San Mateo County.

There are many jobs needed to be completed in this town. First and foremost is finding a way to be self-supporting so that our programs continue to flourish. A state of the art library is also an essential need. The Sanchez Library should be kept open. Affordable housing is another issue which needs to be addressed.

Elect Maxine Gonsalves, a proven leader.
