Funding for Public Education

By Mark F. Underwood

Candidate for Board Member; North Sacramento School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I support an increase in funding at the state level for public education.
The State of California needs to begin to shoulder more of the costs associated with public schools. I am supporting Proposition 47 on the November ballot because it increases the amount of funding for schools by the State without any increase in taxes. We need to get back to fully funding Proposition 98 which imposes a minimum level of education funding that the State of California must adopt by law. Also, the amount that public education receives from the state lottery should be increased from the current 34 percent to 40 percent. This can be accomplished by reducing lottery administrative costs from the current 16 percent down to 10 percent. If the State of California can find the money to build more prisons, then it can certainly find the money to educate our young people.
