MOVING TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS

By Erthia L. Johnson

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Grant Joint Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The Grant Joint Union High School District is moving forward with improvements to its facilities. Continued improvements will enhance the learning enviornment and instill pride in both staff and students.
When I was elected to the Board in 1992 the district was pleagued with deficit spending, dimly lit classrooms, inadequate heating and ventilation systems. Parental participation was at an all time low. Due to an antiquated wiring system modern technology could not be fully implemented. One of our high schools had no stadium lights. Some of our high schools had no two way communication system in their classrooms. Some handicapped students at Grant High School had problems getting to and from the library which is located on the second floor. The cost of our insurance was skyrocketing.

We now have improved heating and ventilation systems in our schools and offices. Most of our schools (High and Jr High) have been rewired to accommodate modern technology. Lighting systems in all of our schools has been upgraded. We have a new insurance provider. Two way communication systems has been installed in most of our classrooms. Rio Linda High School has lights at its football stadium and the lights at Highlands High School football stadium has been upgraded. Each high school now has a parent center to foster more parental participation. Grant High School has a wheelchair lift.

There is more work to be done. We have been working since 1994 to develop a Vocational Educational Technology Center at McClellan AFB and to build a new Junior High School on Norwood Avenue. There are plans to renovate the swimming pool and also add classrooms at Rio Linda High School. I have made inquires about a football stadium for Foothill High. There are plans to move the bus garage and add more classrooms to Grant High School.

I need your support and input to assist in keeping our district making positive decisions which benefit students, parents and the community at large.

On November 7th 2000 a vote for Erthia L.Johnson is a vote for continued "visionary leadership".

Thanks for you vote.
