A description of the LWV's Guide to Government project

California State Government

Since 1920, the League of Women Voters has focused on citizen education aimed at all of the electorate. Since its inception, the League has helped millions of women and men become informed participants in government. The Guide to Government carries on this noble tradition by uniting the League's trusted nonpartisan publications and basic information on elected officials on one comprehensive Web site. Visitors to the Guide to Government site see the "Find Your Districts and Government Officials" lookup and an overview of browsable governmental levels: federal, state, judicial, county, municipal, schools and special districts.

The "Find Your Districts and Government Officials" lookup feature provides fast access to a list of officials that represent a person at a particular address -- an invaluable tool since many people don't know which districts they live in. Guide to Government's unique lookup shows federal, state, judicial, county, municipal, school and community college districts and special districts with links to contact information (address, phone, fax and email) and meeting times and agendas of governing bodies.

The "About Governments" area explains levels of government in easy-to-understand language. The "About State Executive" category illustrates how the executive branch works with the legislative branch, official duties of office holders, terms served, how vacancies are filled, what state agencies are in general and what agencies we currently have. The "About County Government" category shows the function of a county, how counties are formed, types of counties, functions and services provided by county boards, county administration, finance, planning, law enforcement, public health and welfare, public works and libraries.

There will soon be more information on local level offices, for example, meeting places and agendas. Since this area has just been developed, much of this information has not yet been entered for Bay Area counties.
