Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Debbie Butler

Candidate for
Board Member; Novato Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

In August 2006 I was appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Novato Unified School District. Over the past nine years I have served as Board President twice, President of Marin County School Boards Association for two years, and selected as the 2014 Marin County Trustee of the Year. My husband Gary and I have lived in Novato for 15 years and have two children. Our son is a recent graduate of Novato High and our daughter is currently a sophomore at Novato High.

Besides having a child still in Novato schools, which is important to have that balance on the board, I bring experience and decisive leadership. I've demonstrated the commitment that it takes to be a board member by being active, informed and engaged.

My focus is to continue to provide an effective and innovative education in a safe environment that prepares students for college and career. As the school district embraces positive changes and faces important challenges along with a new superintendent; strong, experienced leadership is needed.

I will work to:

  • Maintain financial stability, protect local control, and ensure accountability.

  • Ensure we attract and retain the best qualified personnel, while providing the tools in order for them to succeed and reach each student.

  • Continue to foster innovative and effective programs and maintain rigorous and differentiated curriculum, while providing equity and access for all students.

  • Strengthen communication and engagement through collaboration, transparency and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders.

I remain committed and will continue to advocate for strong academic excellence through high-quality instruction.
