Support For the 4-Year Degree Program at SDCCD

Through pending legislation, SDCCD has an opportunity to offer certain 4-Year degree programs
SB850, authored by Sen. Marty Block and signed by CA Senators Joel Anderson and Mark Wyland, along with Assemblymen Brian Jones and Rocky Chavez, when signed into law will allow for pilot programs of 4-year Degree projects to be offered by certain Community Colleges in California.

I fully support this idea of a Community College 4-year Degree.

A stipulation of the law, however, says that the Community Colleges cannot offer a 4-Year degree if the program competes with an existing 4-year degree program in the Cal State and/or UC systems.

We have a nursing shortage in some areas of California. Most employers won't even hire a 2-Year Nursing graduate - they want 4-Year Nursing Grads. So, I would recommend a modification of the law, to allow the Community College 4-Year Nursing degree to co-exist with the Cal State/UC Nursing degrees, while the nursing shortage still exists.

Could not the needs of the public take precedence over this internal dissension?

Whichever programs are created or expanded for a 4-Year Degree at the Community College Level, I completely support this innovative way to get more Baccalaureate graduates into the workforce.
