Candidate for Board Member; Carlsbad Unified School District; Full Term

How Sage wants to turn empty buildings into revenue opportunities for Carlsbad Unified.
Empty classrooms and underpopulated schools plague Carlsbad Unified. The longer classrooms sit unoccupied, the more taxpayer dollars are poured straight down the drain. Below, you can see the the dramatic decline in student populations within three of Carlsbad Unified's elementary schools:

In 2004, Buena Vista Elementary had 400 students, but that number has declined to 289 in 2013.

In 2003, Magnolia Elementary had 623 students, but that number has fallen to just 425.

In 2003, Kelly Elementary had 624 students, but that number now sits at just 416.

These declines in student populations gives us an opportunity to turn empty classrooms into revenue for our district. Leasing out classrooms to charter schools, combining underpopulated elementary schools, and potentially using classrooms for a for-profit daycare center all prove to be potentially profitable alternatives.

Carlsbad Unified has been dealt a tough hand of cards due to the state government's misguided approach with funding our district, so we must think outside the box. This doesn't mean raising taxes. It means utilizing the resources and assets we have to guarantee a brighter future for tomorrow.
