Stabilizing rates for Helix Water Ratepayers

By Maria G. Mariscal

Candidate for Board Member; Helix Water District; Division 4

This information is provided by the candidate
Maria Mariscal's entire career has been in the local water industry, and she has the background, experience and relationships to hit the ground running and help Helix ratepayers achieve the goal of stabilized water rates, an increase in local water supplies and a decrease in relying on imported water supplies
Increasing water rates are a concern for all ratepayers, especially during such a critical time when California and the southwest United States are experiencing a significant drought.

The drought we are experiencing is quite serious, but it is not our first one...and likely won't be our last. As an experienced water professional, I have helped water agencies navigate previous drought conditions, and I can bring that experience to the Helix Water District.

In order to financially navigate drought conditions and work to stabilize rates in the future, a large number of issues have to be managed by professionals who understand all the dynamics and forces at play in the water industry. I have that experience and am ready to bring my 27 years in the water industry to work hard at the board level for the Helix Water District where I've lived for 16 years.

When a drought impacts so many outside water reservoirs and sources that we rely on for imported water, then we are simply at a competitive disadvantage. To stabilize rates and have more control about our water future, we must improve our infrastructure and develop more opportunities to increase our local water supply. I have the experience and background to help Helix Water District achieve these goals.

If fortunate enough to be elected, I will continue with my fiscal conservative budgeting priorities, and help find savings as well as pursue new revenue opportunities through partnerships with neighboring districts.

I can help minimize or curtail overly burdensome and costly regulations that do not result in public health protection.

I have deep experience and knowledge about grants that are available to water agencies, and I will help and encourage the district pursue outside grants at every opportunity.

I have experience in maximizing the use of existing infrastructure, and I can help explore collaborative opportunities with other water districts to contain costs and save money.

In the end, I can help bring long-term rate stability to Helix ratepayers. I am ready to serve and would be honored to have your vote. Thank you.
