It feels great to call Imperial Beach home.

By Jim Janney

Candidate for Mayor; City of Imperial Beach

This information is provided by the candidate
It feels great to live in Imperial Beach, the city looks better than it ever has!

Under my leadership and with the help of the present and previous City Councils we have made Imperial Beach a great place to call home.

Making promises that the Mayor alone has no control of will only disappoint the residents of our fine community. With the cooperation of the council, the residents of Imperial Beach and a dedicated city staff I do promise to continue to bring quality improvements throughout our city. I have demonstrated the ability to lead Imperial Beach in this direction. Experience really does count. Being a mayor is a difficult job. A mayor does not have the same influence and authority as a private industry CEO, which I am. Being a mayor requires more persuasive skills than decision skills to run a city.

As your Mayor, for the past eight years, I've worked hard to ensure the City is responsive to all residents and businesses and that all are encouraged to participate. Working together, we have made Imperial Beach a better place to live, work and play, while protecting our small hometown atmosphere.

Experience will be essential to continue our positive direction. My experience as your Mayor, successful business owner and as a United States Navy veteran gives me the unique set of skills necessary to weigh all aspects of City matters. My proven leadership on behalf of Imperial Beach has resulted in the opening of a world-class hotel, new businesses, continued neighborhood revitalization, increased revenues and lower crime rates.

Under my leadership, investing wisely and spending carefully has helped us achieve financial stability. Maintaining this revenue stream is crucial to support City services and community needs for future generations. But there is still more to do.

A top quality of a good mayor is honesty. Making unsubstantiated character accusations is not. Mutual respect is yet another essential quality of being a good mayor. Having been elected 3 times by the citizens of Imperial Beach, I have demonstrated that mutual respect. Management and Leadership Skills are also a key quality of a good Mayor. My peers and colleagues throughout the region have elected me as Vice-Chairman of SANDAG and the business community has supported me as President and currently Treasurer of the SCEDC. For over a decade, I have supported and been a member of the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce. I have participated and volunteered in numerous local programs and projects through-out our city for over a decade. For instance, on behalf of the Business Improvement District, my wife and I along with other local volunteers have been installing the Christmas trees at Triangle and Veterans Park for almost 15 years.

Let's talk about what really is happening now. Under my leadership and with the cooperation of the entire city council, we are moving forward on more quality of life improvements including:

  • The city's capital improvement program has projects throughout the city including directing staff to pave close to 50% of the unpaved alleys throughout the city. This project is presently in design with expected construction in 2015.
  • The city is currently working with SDG&E, installing over 3 dozen new street lights east of 13th Street; we are over 50% complete.
  • The installation of new sidewalks on Delaware Street, 10th Street and the north east section of 13th Street are in design and also scheduled for construction in 2015. The 13th Street sidewalk is part of a project that was awarded a grant worth over $1,000,000.
  • The city received another grant for over $700,000 to rework the roads and sidewalks on Elm Avenue in front of the Mar Vista High School.
  • The city is also partnering with the South Bay Union School District to explore enhancements to both Bayside and Central Elementary Schools that will benefit both the schools and the surrounding neighborhoods.
  • The city council last month was presented with a new, exciting design for the Breakwater retail development at 9th and Palm. The project is expected to start late this year or early 2015.

It takes time and dedication to serve as Mayor. With my family's support, I pledge to continue to represent Imperial Beach with integrity and respect. It feels good to live in Imperial Beach. Together we can continue to improve our quality of life one small step at a time.

I respectfully ask for your vote on November 4th.
