Candidate for Board Member; Los Alamitos Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
It is an honor serving on the LAUSD board for the past four years, most recently as clerk. Below are some of the district accomplishments and the things I'm passionate about
Dr. Jeff Barke and I are running for re-election to the Los Alamitos School Board. We desire to continue the work we've been doing to make Los Al Schools the top in our County, State and Country. Over the last 4 years we have made incredible progress toward this goal. Among the highlights are:
  • Three elementary schools in the top 10 in OC.
  • Three 10-10 Schools
  • All but one of our schools are National Blue Ribbon Schools
  • We have the highest college enrollment rate in OC. These are just to name a few. One of things we are most passionate about is making sure our students are not only achieving academically at their individual highest level but are also engaged in Activities, Arts and Athletics. We want to insure our students are ready for the 21st century and part of that is being a well-rounded compassionate human beings. The Boards main responsibilities are to set direction for the District, set policy and hold the Superintendent accountable. We are also responsible to create an environment of cooperation with the three communities we serve: Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and Seal Beach. Our schools reside in these communities and many of our schools sites are also used as recreational facilities. Our schools impact these three communities in many ways and it's imperative that we have a strong working relationship. The staff that serves the Los Alamitos School District is unparalleled in passion, professionalism and loyalty. We often say our people are the hallmark of the district and it is so true. It always touches my heart when I speak with a staff member and they tell me how much working for the district means to them and that they feel it's a family. The teachers in our district are also "lifelong learners". They embrace the extensive staff development we provide for them. I believe the best way to get our students to embrace lifelong learning and continued personal growth is to see it modeled by their teachers and parents. We have signature practices that can be seen at every school site. They include reader's workshop, writer's workshop, thinking maps and CGI just to name a few. Once again, I want to thank you for your support of the Measure K Bond (which I chaired). It has allowed us to transform all of our campuses. I used to say I wished our buildings could reflect the same level of amount of excellence as the teaching and learning that goes on within them. I now believe our campuses do reflect that. These campuses are assets of our community. The board is very proud that our modernization has been on time and on budget. Because of the good stewardship of the board and unanticipated matching funds from the state, we have been able to achieve even more than first planned. My husband Randy and I were blessed to have raised our sons here in this school district and community. As with many residents, we moved here for the schools. We raised our son's to always give more than they were given. I will continue to give back to this district which has given us so much. A few of the ways I've done this is my current position as board clerk, former President of LAEF, Chairman of Measure K, Committee Chair of Measure K Oversight and various other rolls throughout the district and school sites for the last 20 plus years. I am honored to serve on the board with Dr. Barke and hold him in the highest regard as I do my other board members. I choose to run with Dr. Barke because of this respect but also because the current board is a dynamic group of individuals that challenge each other and the superintendent to continue to reach for the stars and Ignite Unlimited Possibilities for our students. I would be honored to serve four more years with this group of caring professionals that keep the main thing the main thing + our students, parents and community. Please re-elect Jeff Barke and Diana Hill to the Los Alamitos Unified School District Governing Board. Diana D. Hill
