Public Education: Not Broken, Not Perfect

Our education system is not failing! Let me repeat so there is no misunderstanding. Cutting through the hype, blather and talking heads. We are not failing! Dedicated teachers, paraprofessionals and front line administrators have been successful in improving the learning experience for decades as the student population became more complex and challenging. This occurred in an era of dwindling support, misguided detours and outright attacks by politicians, non-educators and those who wish to profit from the dismantling of the public school system in America.

It is time to quit bashing our schools and begin to support those on site who give their best every day. We don't need to fix our schools, we need to support the day to day work that is the norm. We need to stop micromanaging our classrooms and give educators the tools to reflect and grow to meet the future challenges.

As a member of the school board, my job will be to make sure funds and district policies are directed to site support, not imposition of ever-changing dictates from above. Additionally, I must evaluate the Superintendent in her ability to carry out the vision of making Mt. Diablo Unified a place where our students, each in their own way, can grow, explore and discover the tools that will allow them to be successful in the future.
