Nurturing Environment

By Mary D'Amour

Candidate for Board Member; Placer Hills Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
As a plant grows healthy in nutrient rich soil with plenty of sunshine and water, so a child grows up healthy in an environment that is safe, has clear boundaries, is supportive, respectful and full of love and compassion.
We all know that a healthy individual is not just smart, but has a good attitude, accepts individual responsibility, values oneself and others, and behaves with integrity and honor. A well-rounded education nurtures children as individuals. It focuses on the needs of the whole child, not just their academic standing. Children learn best in an environment where they are loved, where their most basic needs are met, and where they are cared for by adults who are willing to take the time to listen and understand them and give them instruction in a warm and safe environment. Not every child is born to be a rocket scientist! However, if we encourage each child to do their best, to have a good attitude, to accept responsibility for their behavior, to manage their time efficiently, to value themselves and their abilities and have compassion and respect for others, we can build a generation of individuals who know how to work together as a team for the common good. We, as parents and educators must lead by example in working together ourselves for this common goal. My mission is to ensure an atmosphere of warmth and integrity in a safe, supportive, respectful environment where children can grow strong physically, emotionally, morally, and academically.
