The Benefits of Rent Control

By Ilse Rosenstein

Candidate for Member, Rent Control Board; City of Santa Monica

This information is provided by the candidate
Rent Control is a positive force in our community. It helps to maintain diversity and stability in our city.
Under the Rent Control Law, it is possible for tenants to live in affordable, well-maintained homes, free from harassment, and for landlords to receive a reasonable rate of return on their investment.

Currently, more than 60% of units are rented at market rates. However, these tenants still receive the protections afforded by the provisions of the Rent Control Law.

The higher, market-rate, rents have resulted in a much greater turn-over of tenants, affecting the stability of the population. One effect of the temporary nature of their residency is that many market rate tenants are not aware of the issues confronting Santa Monica.

The involvement of the residents is basic to the character of our community. Tenants living in rent controlled units contribute much to the vitality of our city.
