There is a battle for recognition and success among the Latinos of this country. Living in my adopted city, Fullerton, I encountered strong barriers that made me realized that there is a mist of misunderstanding among current school district leadership. From the lack of academic achievement to demographic segregation within the Latino community at FJUHSD, there is an outcry of inequality in success and achievement at most grade levels. Just a couple of years ago, I stood among the unsecured, low self-esteem high school students that pondered and wondered about its future as a Latina in the United States. Today, I stand before you as candidate for the FJUHSD board of trustees. I stand ready to help bridge the gap for the Latinos in Fullerton high schools while celebrating the rich diversity, heritage, and roots of FJUHSD Latinos/as. I tell you today, that I joined the race TO BRING AWARENESS TO THE COMMUNITY, TO BRING EQUALITY AND ACCESSIBILITY TO ALL STUDENTS AT FJUHSD, TO TAKE EFFECTIVE/IMMEDIATE ACCION AGAINST THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP OF MINORITY'S. As a student, I relate strongly to the daily challenges we encounter in our climb to academic, financial, and personal success. As Professor, Dr. Lily Rivera wrote in his essay, Cinco de Mayo, A Battle for Recognition, "The battle will only be won when Hispanics no longer remain at the top of the dropout list, the prison population, and the unemployment lines... until the day when Hispanic Americans stand truly equal to all other Americans". This is also my vision. If you support me, together we can one day see the end of this battle....we can one day say that our lives meant more because we allowed our children to walk among their peers as equals.
