How the Asessor's office can work for you

By Richard N. Benson

Candidate for Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk; County of Marin

This information is provided by the candidate
Richard gives his update on the tough times and how he can make the Assessor's office work for you
Both public and private sectors are responding to the economic downturn. I work with our Department's and the County's Long Term Restructuring plan to manage our current budget limitations as well as to plan for future years. Our Department has reduced staff by attrition and the County Voluntary Separation Program, eliminated overtime expenses, and increased production in response to the increase in the volume of assessment reductions.

As your Assistant County Assessor, I see homeowners and businesspeople every day dealing with issues of diminished return on their investment, and fares about the futures. Here are just a few of the ways in which I can help in these tough economic times and in the future, as your next County Assessor:

  • review and re-engineer department organization to improve efficiencies
  • review all budget categories and implement improvements to departmental performance planning
  • coordinate with County long term planning goals for long term opportunities
  • improve training to ensure enhanced performance from all in the department
  • improve communication and cooperation of work teams in the department
  • implement additional automation and use of technology in a variety of applications in the department
  • improve taxpayer communications through our website and the media
  • improve communication to jurisdictions receiving property tax revenue including major upgrades to website
  • explore legislative opportunities for taxpayer assistance and fiscal responsibility
