Since Pedro's election to the State Assembly in 2004, he has shown a strong commitment to California's families, public safety, and protecting the environment. Whether he's fighting for hard working men and women, reasserting the rights of sexual assault victims, or helping law enforcement protect our communities, you can count on Pedro.

Pedro Nava has a 100% 2008 AFL-CIO COPE voting record. As a legislator, he has been a fierce supporter of labor. He campaigned against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's initiatives to strip California's workers of their political voice. He also has a 100% record with Equality California and has been named Legislator of the Year by many organizations including the American Red Cross.

He has been endorsed by Sierra Club California. Pedro Nava is well known in the environmental community, having earned the highest coastal protection voting record while serving for eight years on the California Coastal Commission. Since his election to the Assembly, he has consistently authored important legislation to protect the environment and is currently leading the fight against expanded oil drilling off our precious coast.

Working his way through school as a box boy, he became a member of what is now called the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. After graduation from law school, Pedro worked with labor, the public and private sectors, community colleges, vocational schools, and community based organizations to help the unemployed segue into job training programs. He later headed up the Fresno County District Attorney's Targeted Narcotics Program, prosecuting drug dealers. He was the first non-peace officer named "Peace Officer of the Year" by the National Latino Peace Officers' Association (NLPOA). As a member of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office, he was assigned to the Consumer Business Law Section.

Pedro has been recognized by the California State Sheriffs' Association as "Outstanding Legislator" in 2008 and 2009 and honored by the State Coalition of Probation Officers. The NLPOA has also recognized Pedro "for [his] outstanding dedication and support."

Pedro has also been honored by both CALPIRG and the California Consumer Federation for his 100% voting record fighting for consumers. Born in 1948, Pedro grew up and attended public schools in Southern California. A strong supporter of public education, he studied at San Bernardino Valley College, graduated from California State University, San Bernardino, and obtained his law degree from the University of California, Davis' Martin Luther King Jr. School of Law.
