Karen Blake holds two degrees, an Associate of Arts in Computer and Information Science from North Harris Community College and a Bachelors of Science in Geology from Sam Houston State University. While completing her coursework towards her masters in environmental geochemistry from the University of Maine, her life took a different path, leading her to California. Since 1997, Karen has been working in the petroleum industry as she finished raising her children.

It was through her children that she became involved in volunteering in her local elementary schools. She has volunteered in adult literacy programs, as well as tutoring at her local college. Later, she worked as a substitute teachers in an inner city school district near Houston, Texas. She has also worked as adjunct faculty, teaching environmental geology. Karen has also developed and taught industry computer classes. She serves as the Education Initiative Chair for her professional society, which held an education symposium last year in Ventura, California.

Recognizing that our education system is continuing to decline, Karen Blake is now running for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
