An American Success Story

Barbara Alby is truly an American success story. At one time, a welfare mom and domestic violence victim, today, she is the Acting Board Member for the State Board of Equalization's Second District.

As a successful businesswoman and Republican Leader she understands the importance of "fair and just" administration of tax policy. She has a proven record as a tireless advocate for the taxpayer and business community. Protecting taxpayers is not new to her. Each and every year that she served in the State Assembly she was named "Tax Fighter of the Year" by the National Tax Limitation Committee.

The defining moment in Barbara's life was the day Governor Ronald Reagan cut her welfare benefits. She didn't like him very much back then but she credits him today. He changed her life.

That same tenacity and inner strength that helped her at critical moments in her early life served her well in 1993 when she was elected to the California Legislature, representing the Sacramento area. Foremost among Barbara's legislative accomplishments are laws to protect women and children from sexual predators. She is the author of Megan's Law in California as well as her landmark legislation that now allows police to arrest for "probable cause" in domestic violence situations. This law has been a significant intervention tool, saving women in violent relationships.

If there was one word to describe Barbara it would be courageous. She has never failed to stand and effectively defend her conservative values. Even at times taking on her own political party.

Barbara Alby is the taxpayer advocate that working men and women need at the Board of Equalization.
