June 8, 2010 San Mateo County Controller election Candidate Statement: Name: Tom Huening

Occupation: San Mateo County Controller/Businessman/Certified Public Finance Officer

Age: 68

The Controller's Office handles all financial transactions including payroll, audit and accounting functions for San Mateo County. We produce two award-winning publications annually, the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and the Popular Annual Financial Report which are available to all citizens. The office works with and supports cities, schools and special districts on financial matters.

Since 1999 when I took office, I have professionalized the office; we handle more accounting and auditing transaction with fewer employees and have improved the quality of our services. In 1999 there were 53 staff members; this coming budget year there will be just 41 including 7 CPA's.

Our audit approach has changed from "compliance-only" to include "operational reviews" that help County departments save money and operate more efficiently. The Controller's Office has saved and kept more than $300 million of taxpayer money here in San Mateo County - just in my time in office.

I have the qualifications (bachelors, masters and law degrees), but more importantly, I have demonstrated experience and success on the job.

I would appreciate your vote and continued support.

/s/Tom Huening, CPA
