Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator; County of San Joaquin

This information is provided by the candidate

Dear Citizens of San Joaquin County;

Thank you for entrusting me with the privilege of serving you as Sheriff over the past three years. My staff and I have been working diligently to build the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office into the quality public service agency that you desire and deserve.

Our first priority was to immediately begin recruiting young men and women from our diverse county to fill the ranks of Deputy Sheriffs, Correctional Officers, and support staff like Evidence Technicians and Office Assistants. This effort has culminated in our communities finding quicker response times and a greater presence of patrol deputies. The county has the highest number of working deputies in its history! We did not stop there; we have implemented the Community Car program providing direct community oriented policing in our rural communities which ensures officers working directly with the citizens. Additionally, we were one of the few Sheriff's Offices nationwide that sought and received $5.1 million in stimulus funding for 17 deputy sheriff positions over a three year period, beginning in January of this year.

I have encouraged all the police departments within the county to continue our ongoing battle against drugs and gangs. The METRO narcotics task force has seen a great increase in staffing from the Sheriff's Office and our allied agencies. Additionally, our detective division now has assigned staff to gang enforcement which is supported by intelligence from our custody division.

Our youth are our future, and we have established two programs which provide our young people with opportunities to experience working with the Sheriff's Office while they pursue their education and possibly seek a career in law enforcement. The Sheriff's Cadet Program is for 18 to 21 year olds who are paid to perform valuable services like removing abandoned cars, boats, and trailers from our county roadways before they become damaged burned-out eyesores. We have chartered a new Law Enforcement Explorer Program for our 14 to 18 year olds giving them a look at the profession while providing guidance to keep them on the road to success.

We continue to work on increasing our jail bed space so that we can eliminate the court ordered population cap and ensure that criminals serve their full sentences. I have fought hard in Sacramento to obtain the $80 million dollars needed to move forward with building an additional jail facility. Plans are under way!

Finally, I believe in building strong working relationships. I have made myself available to the public and welcomed their calls and visits to improve our level of service to the citizens of San Joaquin County. I have also established solid effective working partnerships with the County Administrator and the Board of Supervisors. This relationship has made it possible for our accomplishments to date and will be even more critical as the county begins to address the current budget crisis with the goal of preserving the highest level of services to you.

As you can see we have been working very hard, I guarantee that will continue as no one will work harder as your Sheriff. Thank you again for your past support and belief in the positive course we have set for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.
