Why I Am Running and Why I Would be Effective?

By Carla Small

Candidate for Council Member; Town of Ross

This information is provided by the candidate
I became interested in and excited about learning what was important to our residents while developing the first community-wide survey in 2009, at no cost to the Town. In preparing and managing the process of the survey, the committee and I were pleased with the participation rate of 33%, which was a clear indication that our community took an active interest in our future. I hope to bring the importance of our community voice to the Council.

Since 1991, I have been an active community volunteer in Ross. Having enjoyed positions as the Ross School PTA President, the School Site Council Chair, a member of the Ross Recreation Auxiliary, and a long-term member of the RPOA from 2003 to 2009, I have developed a deep understanding and love for the Town of Ross. Prior to living in Marin, I was both on the Board of Central Florida Women's League and an active fund raiser for "Give Kids the World" in Orlando. The culmination of these experiences refined my communication and collaboration skills, which I will bring to the Ross Town Council.

While earning my degree in secondary education, I chose to join the Marriott Corporation, Hotel Management Division. In my last position at Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage, my management team earned the prestigious 5 Star Award from the Mobil Corporation. This was the only Marriott Resort to ever earn that recognition from its inception. While overseeing the budget and the staff of 60, I was also managing $17 million in room sales. Success in the hospitality industry is dependent on accessing the needs of guests and graciously taking care of employees who ultimately deliver customer service. I found the joy in this business to be the unpredictability and daily challenges. Based on my diverse experiences, if elected to the Ross Town Council, I will be able to do my best to accurately assess the needs and concerns of all Ross citizens while representing them in a fair, balanced and transparent manner.
