Kerry Mazzoni, Candidate, Marin County Board of Supervisors, District 1

Experience: Kerry is a product of California's public schools. She graduated from Novato High School and the University of California, Davis with a Bachelor of Science in Child Development. She has served her community for over 30 years in both the non-profit sector and in elected office.

Kerry knows how to take on an issue at the local, state and national levels and win. She has spent most of her adult life fighting for high quality public schools and she knows that good schools are the center of healthy and safe communities.

  • Elected to the California State Assembly in 1994 representing Marin and Sonoma Counties; she served until 2000 when she was termed out. While in the Assembly she chaired the Assembly Education Committee for 4 years and was a member of numerous committees including the Utilities and Commerce Committee; Transportation Committee; Housing and Community Development Committee; and Health Committee. Kerry also served as chair of the California Legislative Women's Caucus and as chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures Education Committee.
  • Once termed out of the Assembly, Kerry was appointed California's Secretary of Education by Governor Gray Davis.
  • Kerry serves and has served as a member of the board of Directors for numerous local non-profit organizations including the Conservation Corps North Bay (formerly the Marin Conservation Corps) where she served as President during its recent expansion to Sonoma County; Bolinas Lagoon Foundation; California Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA); the Marin Dance Theatre; the Marin Education Fund; the Novato Human Needs Center; the Novato Youth Center.
  • Kerry is a local business owner providing governmental relations services.

Environment: Kerry is an avid supporter of green initiatives and protecting our environment. She will work hard to ensure that our open space is protected and that our natural resources are conserved. The environmental issues of today require problem solving in new and different ways--ways that must bring all stakeholders together to solve the complex issues of clean air, water quality and supply, renewable and clean energy, and transportation near jobs and housing. Our business and technical partners will be crucial in solving these problems--there can no longer be a divide between business and the environmental community--we must work together--and we can. Kerry knows that a strong economy is essential to a clean, healthy and protected environment.

Kerry has a strong environmental record. While in the Assembly she secured funding for the restoration of the Bolinas Lagoon and the expansion of Tomales Bay State Park with the purchase of Millerton Point, saving it from development.

Jobs/Economy: Kerry understands the many economic challenges facing our community. Marin County has nearly a 9 percent unemployment rate + businesses are closing and many small businesses are struggling to keep their doors open. Teachers will be laid off and services to our most vulnerable citizens are likely to suffer cuts. Kerry is a small business owner and understands their needs -- to attract talented and skilled employees, to make payroll, and to cover expenses of maintaining a business. She strongly supports job and business development, especially "green job" creation.

Kerry will bring the kind of experience Marin needs to address the daunting problems facing our county. She is a thoughtful and sensible leader who knows that bringing people together to solve problems in a collaborative manner results in good government and healthy, clean and safe communities.
