Lou Calcagno has lived since birth in Moss Landing. He is a self-employed dairyman and farmer in North County, following in the seventy-five year tradition of his family. He attended local schools in Monterey County and majored in Dairy Husbandry and Manufacturing at CalPoly San Luis Obispo. He is married and the father of two children.

Lou is a state and national dairy leader, whose past service includes: Chairman of the California Milk Advisory Board, Chairman of the National Dairy Promotion and Research Board, and Chairman of the California Co-Operative Creamery, which had over 450 members.

As the appointee of Governor Pete Wilson, Lou served on the California Coastal Commission and became the Chair. He was an eighteen-year member of the Monterey County Planning Commission, and a three-term member of the Board of Supervisors. Lou was first elected to the seat of the third district in 1999. After re-districting occurred, he was twice elected to the seat of the second district. Inn 2009, Supervisor Calcagno served his third term as Chair.

Lou is also a charter member of the Ag Land Trust (formerly named the Monterey County Agricultural and Historical Land Conservancy) as well as the Elkhorn Slough Foundation. The Foundation awarded him its highest honor, the Heritage Award, for his efforts to protect and conserve the sloughs and their environs. Recently, the Santa Cruz Farm Bureau named Lou as the recipient of the Al Smith Friend of Agriculture award and the Boy Scouts named him Scouter of the Year in 2009.
