Smart Voter Full Biography for David L Warner

Candidate for
Member, Board of Education; Greenburgh Central School District

This information is provided by the candidate

Civic and Schoolboard Experience:

I've served for three years on the GC7 school board, and currently chair the Community Engagement Committee (CEC). I'm an active liaison to the PTA Council, a Technology committee member, and a WISE mentor.

Before my election, I worked on the school reorganization task force, Highview homework help (2 years), the CEC, and the PTA Council (VP and Treasurer).

In my youth I did volunteer work in my church, feeding the poor and tutoring ESL. Later I chaired a local Sierra Club group and helped publish its newsletter.

I walked precincts in town board elections in Ventura, California, and did campaign work for a US Senator.

Family:

My wife works in the credit card division of Citibank. My daughter is an 8th grade honor student at Woodlands Middle School. She plays the saxophone in the school band, and takes ballet and helps beginning class ballerinas at the White Plains YWCA. Our cat hunts chipmunks in the back yard.

How long lived in the district:

We have lived in this district for nine years. We moved to Greenburgh from Yonkers in 2001 when our daughter was 5 because we loved the programs at Lee F. Jackson. We've had good experiences at Jackson, Highview, RJ Bailey, and now Woodlands Middle School.

Education: I hold a Bachelor's Degree in English from Cal State Fullerton, and a Master's Degree in Computer Science from Lehman College.

Occupation:

Software engineer and writer. I have 18 years of experience at Unisys and Timeplex, and have incorporated myself as Silvertine Inc. Software projects completed are primarily network management application enhancements on Windows and Sun platforms. Writing projects include technical manuals, online help systems, engineering specifications, and project plans. On the lighter side, I've also written a children's story, The Liver Bear Saga.

What qualifies me to be on the BOE:

I am familiar with the educational environment, and the educator's viewpoint.

I was a teachers' kid. My mother taught elementary school and was later an administrator. My father was a combination English teacher and Cross Country coach.

I did a year of high school and middle school student teaching, and turned down a teaching job to enter into my technical career.

I have business experience. I gained significant project management experience in my years at Unisys (originally Burroughs) and later at Timeplex. Often my writing skills and sometimes my technological knowledge come in handy.

I gained significant experience as a parent volunteer in the district before running for office. (See civic and school board experience above.)

I am an incumbent with three years of experience on the board.
