  • Economic Development and Jobs

We can create diverse business and employment opportunities that fit our environment, provide living wage jobs, and enhance our quality of life through the development of marine oriented light industries, boat building and renewable energy development such as wave energy. Aquaculture and tourism around the bay also have great potential for growth.

  • Trails and Recreational Access

The creation of a Humboldt Bay pedestrian and bike trail system is one of my top priorities. Ongoing collaboration with many stakeholders has resulted in the beginning of trail development from Arcata to Bracut. This is an exciting step toward the creation of an Arcata to Eureka trail. Facilities for fishing, boating and windsurfing are also moving forward, including a new dock for the boat ramp at the Arcata marsh.

  • Short Sea Shipping

A practical plan is needed for efficient movement of goods to and from Humboldt Bay. I support keeping our harbor entrance safe for our barging and shipping enterprises and I will continue to lead the effort to establish sustainable and cost-effective short sea shipping infrastructure.

  • Watershed and Wetland Restoration

I support restoration and water quality projects that improve the entire Humboldt Bay watershed and wetland areas. We must maintain our levees and tide gates in a way that reconnects the bay and its fisheries with the surrounding watershed.

  • Fishing and Aquaculture

Mariculture and fishing industries are important for our culture and economy. I continue to support environmentally friendly development of facilities and research that will diversify and develop these vital industries.

  • Marine Life Protection Act

Marine life protection areas can be effective tools for increased fisheries. However, the proposal set to affect our coast must be backed by sound science and supported by our fishing community if it is to be successful.

  • Billboard Removal

Billboards are a blight on our bay. I will encourage the district to work with the North Coast Railroad Authority to follow through on their pledge, made almost ten years ago, to remove the billboards currently on the publicly owned right-of-way between Arcata and Eureka.

  • The Wiyot Tribe

The Wiyot people have a strong connection to the bay they call Wigi. I will ensure that the District continues to work with the Tribe and protect sacred sites and cultural values.

  • Transparency and Fiscal Responsibility

I will continue to advocate for increased openness and accessibly, and active community participation. The district must move towards a balanced budget so that we can continue to provide needed services.
