A Faster Moving Community

By Robert Schwartz

Candidate for Council Member; City of Los Angeles; District 5

This information is provided by the candidate
Sadly, Los Angeles is synonymous with gridlocked streets and a car culture. Robert believes LA is ready for a cultural change and can do so without leaving the car-dependent behind.

  • Robert supports the Exposition Line, Subway to the Sea, extension of the Green Line to LAX, and Crenshaw Corridor Line. These transit projects will provide people with alternatives to their automobiles, reducing gridlock and oil dependency.
  • Robert will work to create a public transit route linking the Valley and the Westside.
  • Robert will actively explore creative revenue sources for the completion of these projects. Possible funding could include Metro's half-cent sales tax, federal appropriations, and public-private partnerships.
  • However, construction should not come at the cost of our neighborhoods. Working with the communities, Robert will ensure that the new lines will not be disruptive to neighbors.
  • Robert supports efforts to relieve East-West traffic on Pico Boulevard. Currently, the Olympic West Pico East initiative is undergoing a full environmental review. Robert will make certain that community voices will be heard to have the best result for the community and commuters.
  • Recent news that school districts are cutting back on bus service for students creates a host of new problems but also presents opportunities. Too many of our local schools can only be safely reached by school bus or car. We need to change this by improving intersections, bike routes, and sidewalks so that students do not need a motorized vehicle to get to class.
  • While we do need to think big, Robert will also advocate for short-term fixes like the expansion of Metro Rapid Bus service, the synchronization of traffic lights, better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians and new left hand-turn signals.
