Measured, Quality Growth and Redevelopment

By Mario J. De La Torre

Candidate for Council Member; City of San Gabriel

Our Business Community needs to grow and be reflective of our citizens' wants and needs
City Leaders should be at the forefront in the promotion and support of the local business community.  We need to encourage the creation of new job opportunities and citizen-owned businesses, and find solutions to end the business exodus from our city.  Better communication between our citizens and the Council will enable us to attract businesses that truly reflect our citizens' interests and needs. The right combination of business and residential development will help ensure the economic health of our city, but must still maintain the look and feel of our historic hometown. While encouraging growth, the Council must emphasize that development must contribute to the fiscal well-being of our city so that vital services and infrastructure are well-maintained.
What happened to the outstanding San Gabriel Comprehensive General Plan? Where is the evidence of its on-going implementation? What changes are needed now in light of uncertain funding? What land-use and zoning changes are needed? How will development affect our schools? How will we meet our energy and water needs? What solutions will help ease the increased traffic? Now more than ever, we need to actively promote our business community! How should we do it? The City Council needs to rapidly and throughly address these issues.
