Throughout my life, I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to serve others -- as a proud Marine in the sunni triangle region of Iraq and the Horn of Africa, as a political advisor to emerging democracies, as a volunteer and community activist for charitable groups and veterans here in San Diego, and as a lifelong Republican helping candidates and causes in California and around the country.

Now I want to serve as your State Assemblyman. This decision is a continuation of my desire to serve, but more importantly a reflection of my upbringing. I grew up in a hard working blue collar family and learned the importance of service at an early age. I'll never forget watching my Mom's daily struggle to help victims of crime through her work in shelters for battered women and children - this instilled in me a desire to find a way to help others.

I have been humbled by the encouragement I've received from a wide variety of people - Republican elected officials, business leaders, community activists, family and friends, fellow Marines, and old friends I worked construction with in high school and college.

And so I am proud to announce my candidacy for the California State Assembly.

I'm excited about the opportunities serving in the state legislature provides-and optimistic about meeting the challenges we face.

We are in an era that provides us an amazing chance to harness the advances of technology and the creative power of the competitive market and our entrepreneurial spirit to truly reform the failing operations of government.

And there is no place that is more needed than here in California.

With every issue - whether it is controlling government spending, protecting the taxpayer, strengthening education, reducing traffic congestion or stopping illegal immigration - we must do better.

Government shouldn't be the answer. But when it has to be, it must be cost effective, efficient and accountable to the people who pay the taxes - you.

I know how hard families work for their money and that is why everyone who serves in elected office should commit to ask the tough questions and demand better results. I will do that.

I am asking for your help. The true greatness of America is not our government, not our economic might and not our elected officials -it is you, our people.

I am blessed to have the support of so many in my campaign, and I hope you will join us-without question my greatest supporter is my wife Mindy. She was patient with me through several combat tours overseas and has been my greatest source of encouragement in this endeavor.

So we hope you will join us in this campaign-despite all the challenges we face I am optimistic about the future.
