Campaign statement 2008

By Gerald S. Besses

Candidate for Board Member; Petaluma Health Care District

This information is provided by the candidate
I am qualified through experience in Petaluma Valley Hospital as a medical staff member and officer since 1977 and through my knowledge both of local and national medical affairs and problems.
My Internal Medicine private practice started in Petaluma 31 years ago. I served on the Petaluma Valley Hospital medical staff in every elected position to which I was eligible, including Chair of the Department of Medicine and President of the Staff. When I started practicing law, 10 years ago, I voluntarily surrendered my hospital privileges. Since retiring from my law practice, my medical work is now limited to caring for nursing home residents. I have extensive experience running fund raisers during my membership in Petaluma Valley Rotary.

I have an intimate and practical knowledge of the problems of medicine in our community and for the hospital and the community residents. As times change, increasing social and business pressures will change demands on our health care community.

District assets must be managed to favorably promote the greater community health. The hospital and its community of doctors are resources for our community. As a PHCD board member, my goal will be to preserve that resource to serve the people of the district. My perspectives as a provider of services, former PVH staff member and a consumer will help me to understand where we are going and the best path to get there.
