Planning for the Future

By Walter J. Millar

Candidate for Governing Board Member; San Luis Coastal Unified School District; Trustee Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate
San Luis Coastal Unified School District's Board makes tough decision to prepare for the future!
During my eight years on the School Board we have responded to declining student enrollment, uncertain revenues and changing student needs by taking steps to insure quality programs for students and financial stability. I voted in support of the below measures:

In 2000 the Board closed three elementary sites that were under-utilized saving the cost of administrators and non-classroom overhead. The sites have been leased to appropriate users resulting in additional revenues for classrooms. The sites are available for District use should demographics change as is expected after 2015.

The Board has agreed to a 99 year lease for the development of surplus property that will result in a long term income stream for classroom programs.

The Board has established a 5% Reserve for Financial Uncertainty, instead of the 3% required by the Education Code.

The Board has added resources and programs to respond to the needs of the increasing numbers of English Language Learners and Autism Spectrum Special Needs Students.

Our District faces new challenges every day and we will continue to work together to solve them.
