Jan has lived in San Luis Obispo for 20 years with her husband Steven Marx. They have two children and four grandchildren. She is a graduate of Stanford and Santa Clara Law School, has served on City Council and on the Planning Commission. She is a leader in environmental, neighborhood, anti-domestic violence and humanitarian volunteer organizations. She has owned her business since 1993. She is a dedicated public servant and will gladly put her experience, business savvy and land use expertise to work for San Luis Obispo residents.

A Few of Jan's Volunteer and Career Highlights

  • Worked her way through Stanford teaching children's theatre
  • Organized a successful campaign to win Stanford women the right to live off campus
  • Earned an MA at Columbia and taught gifted underachievers in New York
  • Organized to save Morningside Park in New York City from being paved over
  • Founded a summer camp and founded a community college branch in rural Canada
  • Taught English, Writing and Basic Skills at community colleges
  • Served as Assistant Dean of Students at Stanford and Dean of Students at Scripps
  • Earned a law degree at Santa Clara and helped write a brief a U.S. Supreme Court case
  • Served as a SLO County Deputy District Attorney, mostly prosecuting spousal abuse.
  • Helped found the free SLO Restraining Order Clinic, to help domestic violence victims
  • Started her own estate planning, construction, business, & real property law firm (1993)
  • Elected President of San Luis Obispo Women Lawyers Association
  • Member of the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce since 1993
  • Appointed to SLO County Parks and Recreation Commission (5 years)
  • Appointed to SLO County Morros Advisory and Ag & Open Space Element Committees
  • Appointed to the Economic Opportunity Commission (EOC) Board (8 years)
  • Appointed to the City Planning Commission (1996-1998)
  • Elected to the San Luis Obispo City Council (1998-2002)
  • Appointed Mediator for the Los Angeles (2nd) Appellate District
  • Served on the Board of the the Economic Vitality Corporation (EVC)
  • Served on the local Sierra Club Conservation Committee & Board of ECOSLO (6 years)
  • Member of the SLO County Bicycle Coalition & Residents for Quality Neighborhoods
  • Member of Rotary and organizer of the Railroad Safety Bike and Pedestrian Trail Project
