Although I retired from teaching in our public schools after twenty-one years in Paso Robles, I'd like to continue to work to give our students the best educational opportunities possible. This is why I'm running for the Board of Education. I'm also dedicated to keeping the budget cuts AWAY FROM THE CLASSROOMS!

PERSONAL HISTORY:

  • Born in Des Moines, Iowa and two weeks later settled in California.
  • Married for 30 years to Pat Gearhart, who worked and now volunteers at Butler Elementary School.
  • We have three children, two who graduated from Paso High and a third who is currently a Junior there.

EDUCATION:
  • School Leaders Licensure Assessment 187/200(National test)
  • M.A. Ed, with honors: Azusa Pacific University
  • Multisubject Teaching Credential: UCSB
  • Single Subject Teaching Credential: UCSB
  • B.A. History/Minority History: UCSB

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
  • 35 years teaching experience, 21 here in Paso Robles
  • Master Teacher for 27 student teachers from Cal Poly, Chapman, Cal Lutheran, CSUN
  • Daniel Lewis Middle School
  • Flamson Middle School
  • Paso Robles High School (summer sessions)
  • Adult Education (evenings)
  • Elementary, 14 years grades 3-6 in Ventura County

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:
  • South Coast Writing Project Fellow (1981-present) Trained teachers in Language Arts and Writing in five different districts.
  • Reviewed Holt, Rinehart & Winston 6th,7th,and 8th Social Studies texts. PASO ROBLES IS NOW RECOGNIZED IN A STATE ADOPTED TEXTBOOK!
  • Summer School Principal (two weeks) 2007
  • Summer School Vice Principal Middle School 2007. Coordinated and ran program for 26 classes that "front loaded" our kids with the first five weeks of curriculum for the upcoming term, then repeated it at the beginning of the new year. Quarter grades for our remedial students that participated improved by 24% over their previous year.
  • Assessment For Learning training, and then a presenter.
  • NCATE team member: I was selected by the state teacher's union president to represent California teachers during the national NCATE accreditation process of the education department at CSU Bakersfield. Only one teacher a year is selected to participate in this NCATE accreditation review of our teacher training universities and colleges.
  • Cal Poly lecture pool member for School of Education.

COMMUNITY SERVICE:
  • 4H Project Leader for seven years.
  • Collected over a ton of canned goods for Loaves and Fishes
  • Collected clothes and jackets for local projects.
  • Sunday School teacher.
  • Neighborhood Council member/officer.
  • Video project "Seven Wonders of Paso Robles" for tourism.
  • My Drama class raised $900 for the Tsunami relief fund.
