Promoting Academic Acheivement at All Times

By Randy Walton

Candidate for Board Member; San Marcos Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Remarkable academic strides are currently being made in SMUSD, with dramatic gains in the API scores at most schools. I believe those gains are a result of a culture of excellence that has developed in the district in recent years, which I would continue to promote.

As I continue to visit schools in my campaign, I am convinced that the recipe for academic success requires the following:

  • Strong on-campus leadership. This means strong principals who have the time and the desire to focus on instruction and academic development, and who have the respect of the teaching staff. A good relationship between the principal and teaching staff is invaluable.

  • Teacher development. Our teachers should receive continuing education on the latest developments in teaching, and in the subject matters they teach.

  • Improved technology. Some of our schools are well-equipped with the latest technology, but all of our schools deserve it.
