Our school district budget is dependent on the state budget. The school district is required to approve and submit to the San Diego County Office of Education our budget by the end of June which is generally before the state approves their budget. This fact continues to provide a challenge as the board works with staff to develop a balanced budget. In the coming four years we may have more tough times financially, I have the experience to make the best possible decisions for the students of Oceanside.

Thanks to the voters of Oceanside, we will have the funding to continue remodeling our schools. I will continue to monitor the process. If you have driven by South Oceanside, Laurel or Oceanside High or any of our new schools, Chavez Middle School, Foussat or Nichols you know how beautiful all our schools will be. With up to date facilities and equipment our teachers will be able to provide the best possible education for our students. And our students will have surroundings conducive to learning.

Our students are doing better and better. Since I became a board member, fourteen of our schools have become California Distinguished Schools. Although, we are making great strides with many of our students, there are still students who are not performing at grade level. We need to continue our efforts to improve their academic achievement. Even so, our students are learning to live with diversity at an early age; thereby, providing a unique opportunity to foster in our students the understanding of how to work and live together in a global society. Learning is what we all want for ALL of our students. My focus has been and will continue to be our students.
