A COMMITMENT TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

Russell's journey in education began as an Instructional Assistant in a San Diego Unified public school, and then as a Child Care Counselor at residential schools for children with behavior problems. After completing graduate school, Russell was quick to advance to Lead School Psychologist in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. In 2004, he implemented and directed an innovative public alternative school (The Daly Academy) for children with emotional and behavior problems, which was recognized by the California Department of Education as a state model. Currently, Russell is a Special Education Coordinator for the County Office of Education, serving the South County Special Education Local Plan Area, and a University Instructor. Russell has the direct experience of working in our Chula Vista schools, with a history of going beyond the call of duty by serving on many committees in an effort to put our children's needs first. (See "Letters" Link). He believes that all children should be given the opportunity to succeed, and that as educators we must provide and create those opportunities no matter what obstacles affect a student's academic performance.

Russell earned his Bachelors Degree from The University of California, San Diego, and Masters Degree from San Diego State University. Russell has spent time volunteering as a soccer coach for the YMCA. He volunteers his counseling and consulting skills to numerous families. He is active on many boards and committees that have a direct impact on children's lives. As a parent and educator, Russell encourages parents to get involved in their children's education, both socially and academically. His sixteen years of administrative and academic experience within schools have prepared Russell for service on the School Board. With excellent communication and leadership skills, Russell has a talent for responding to and respecting divergent opinions and interests of individuals and groups. His knowledge of general and special education policies, interdisciplinary knowledge of effective service delivery in schools, and school administration experience, will serve the Chula Vista Elementary School District well. With sixteen years of experience in the field of education, Russell has gained the knowledge and expertise necessary to provide a strong voice - a voice for children - that will benefit the education community of the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

To support and celebrate the personal and academic success of every student, every day
