California's Water Crisis

By Augie Caires

Candidate for Director; Padre Dam Municipal Water District; Division 4

This information is provided by the candidate
The San Diego Region is semi-arid with only modest rainfall each year. We are only able to generate 10-15% of our water needs locally. Our two sources of imported water are both in jeopardy. The Colorado River is in it's eighth year of drought, resulting in significantly lower suppies, and a Federal Judge has restricted supplies from the Bay-Delta to protect fish species. The combination of these factors, coupled with historically low reservoir levels up and down the State, means our Region will receive 20-30% less water in 2009, and perhaps greater reductions in 2010 and beyond. All indications are that this is a prolonged water shortage.

Therefore, we are all going to have to become much better at water conservation, of necessity, than we have ever been before. The water industry must educate and inform the public, giving them the tools to become conservers of water and facilitating their compliance with water use restrictions. As a Board Member I will work towards a comprehensive program of water conservation education to ensure that we live within our water means.
