Academics First

By Gary Tomak

Candidate for Board Member; Desert Sands Unified School District; 4 Year Full Term

This information is provided by the candidate
My top priority is the academic achievement of children. I believe we must continue to raise the academic bar for all students. We must close the achievement gap between our best and neediest students. We must continue to provide a variety of choices for students and their parents through magnet schools, independent study, distance learning programs, and vocational education.
Since I was first elected to the school board eight years ago, Desert Sands has made dramatic academic improvement. We must build on our successes. I believe we must continue to raise the academic bar, further close the achievement gap, and provide a variety of school choices for students and their parents. I support building and modernizing schools with the latest technology which has been proven to promote academic growth. With the California state budget in continuing turmoil, I will work to ensure schools and administration become even more efficient in operations and in seeking education grants from alternate sources.

I will continue efforts to select proven and effective curricula, attract and retain good teachers, provide improved teacher training, and ensure classrooms are conducive to learning. By tracking individual student performance, students needing extra help can be quickly identified and matched with supplementary programs.
