Community Colleges, a Gateway to Higher Education

By Molly McClanahan

Candidate for Trustee; North Orange County Community College District; Trustee Area 4

This information is provided by the candidate
I strongly support the opportunities community colleges bring to higher education -- transfer, vocational training, through both credit and non-credit. The "community" in community colleges reflects the awareness of being responsive to the economic and educational needs of our area's population. Therefore, a local orientation and awareness of demographic and other data is critical to best serve those populations.

Historically, the major product of our State has been education. The community Colleges are primary contributors in that effort. I will work to ensure our leadership position in education so that our work force is competitive in the labor market.

Many voters have had some connection with one of our community colleges or school of continuing education. This District serves 70,000 individuals annually. Many residents have themselves or have family members or friends and neighbors who have attended Fullerton College, Cypress College and/or our School of Continuing Education.

Student fees at community colleges are kept low at $20 per unit, therefore access for many is within reach. The emphasis at community colleges is on teaching, and our two collegs have a very fine track record of students who transfer to four year colleges and universities.
